There’s a lack of sound effects on the pages showing the overall town that creates an uneasy silence. Where last issue’s space bus felt rickety and worn, Maypole feels clean and unnerving. Ruthye’s narration both adds and relieves tension, we know she’s okay/alive and the hints of the future let’s us know how these moments altered her, but also that these changes are from exposure to the darker aspects of reality.Įvely and Lopes’ work in this issue is absolutely lovely. But that grief is used to make readers feel that love that Ruthye has for her father and that Supergirl has for her people and home.

It can definitely get bleak in these pages, though, with themes of vengeance and loss and grief used as the driving force. I love the framing to this story, experiencing this through Ruthye’s eyes and reading her future thoughts lends to the hopeful tone of the book. Supergirl and Ruthye’s adventure brings them to the town of Maypole where the residents appear to be a kind sort, though they’re quick to change their colors if outsiders start to ask too many questions. Everything you could ever hope to get in a Supergirl book is right here and it all works so freaking well because the creative team shows just how deeply they care for this character with every single panel. Each issue in this series so far has been an absolute banger.
